Review

Chef Thomas welcomed us in to Stix - the newest Chinese restaurant, a Hyatt Regency's offering to the city. It is on its way to become one of the preferred destination, for the discerning lover of all things Oriental. The open plan space will allow you to experience the smells; sights and sounds of Stix even before you sit down to enjoy the evening. What makes this place stand apart is even though it is a fine dining place it lacks the stiffness and is friendly, stylish and noisy! The limited menu was a lovely surprise with the friendly staff helping us to make our selections. Hot Chinese Tea and cold towels appear as you sit. The starters like Black Fungus have a woody flavour, Dry Tofu that is chewy, crisp. The highlight was the spinach served with peanut sauce. The spring onion and ginger dip was delicious enough to be eaten by itself! Steamed dumplings followed with prawn, lamb, chicken and veggie fillings all light and made to perfection. In the main course the Stir Fried Prawns in XO sauce, Duck with Mushroom and Bokchoy in Chilli Garlic Sauce and the Vietnamese Basa Fish are must haves. The Tofu in Chilli Sauce is soft and melted in the mouth; Broccoli in Oyster Sauce and the Braised Eggplant in Soya Sauce are excellent in their flavours. All of these were accompanied with the Sichuan Noodles in Pepper Sauce, Steamed Rice and the ubiquitous fried rice that were made just right. The Mango Pudding was light and chill, a refreshing way to end this perfect meal. All the while you can enjoy the light Chinese music playing in the background.
