Ponnuswamy's is known for its spartan style. In its more recent avatar, with wood panelling and multiple seating levels, sofa-style chairs, and glass chandeliers, Ponnuswamy's at Egmore looks quite posh and charming. Even at the new Ponnuswamy's they serve you on banana leaves that are firmly held down upon the table with a steel tumbler, or glass. The menu provides a certain thrill. If not Rabbit Masala Fry, or pigeon, brain, or Liver Fry, you can ask for the Shark Puttu - shark that has been shredded into pale white shards of meaty flesh and very lightly spiced. Don't miss the Chettinadu food and the Chicken Pepper Fry (boneless). It's no longer a very typical Tamilian institution but a movement that is spreading, with outlets in Dubai. For the authentic touch of a rabbit fry, you must however make it to Chennai.
